A conservative majority on the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, ending nearly 50 years of abortion protection. In the wake of Friday’s decision, roughly half the states will be able to prohibit abortions, regardless of their legality.
Three Trump appointees on the right side of the court fortified an emboldened right side that made the decision, which was unthinkable even a few years ago.
The judgement came more than a month after Justice Samuel Alito’s draft opinion was leaked that said the court was ready to make this historic decision.
In opinion polls, a majority of Americans favored preserving Roe.
As part of the rulings issued on Friday, Alito concluded that Roe and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, the 1992 decisions that reaffirmed abortion rights, were wrong as of the date of their decision and must be reversed.
The political branches have the power to regulate abortion, Alito wrote.Amy Coney Barrett and Clarence Thomas were also present. Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett also spoke. They are all Trump appointees. In 1985, Thomas voted to overrule Roe.
