93-year-old Man Shot and Critically Wounded A Group Of Burglars In Early Morning: Police Say He Was Justified

In a suburban Los Angeles neighborhood, a 93-year-old homeowner shot and critically wounded a burglar after feeling frustrated over numerous break-ins, according to authorities. The homeowner also scared off the burglar’s accomplices.

Using his gun, the retired plumber confronted a group of home invaders in Moreno Valley early Wednesday morning, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said.

In a statement, the sheriff’s office said Teague called 911 around 12:30 a.m. about an alleged burglary at his home, the sheriff’s office said. According to the sheriff’s department, Teague told dispatchers he had several men at gunpoint.

A suspected burglar was found with a gunshot wound at Teague’s home by deputies.

Before deputies arrived at Teague’s home, several people were seen fleeing the residence on foot.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the injured suspect was identified as Joseph A. Ortega, 33, a resident of Moreno Valley. He is currently in critical condition at an Orange County hospital.

There were no injuries to Teague. According to authorities, he was taken to a sheriff’s station, questioned, and released.

The investigation appears to be ongoing, but officials said the shooting appears to have been justified.

Other assailants are being sought by investigators. No arrests have been announced.

Teague declined to comment.
