1. For what purpose is it used?
What will happen if this piece of writing works? Are there plans to act?
You might fail to accomplish your goal if you are too specific. In addition, if your intent is not specific enough,your chances of success decreases.
2. Tell me about yourself in your writing.
Someone/Everyone writes! Are you a scientist who reports the facts? Would you like to be a political activist rather than a critic? Is it possible you are posting an official warning sign in an official area as the voice of an institution?
3. For whom is it intended?
It’s not easy for a piece of writing to affect someone. No one can be changed by one piece of writing. Then… to whom is this directed? What are they convinced of? How do they feel about you? Is action on their minds?
4. How widespread is it?
Would the person you want to reach share this with his/her friends? Shared action amplifies the impact.
How many people will care about what you have written?
An abrasive, very loud woman coworker once told a another coworker of mine, “Who the **** cares?” I’m not sure to what she was referring, but it got me thinking. Who cares about what I am writing? Considering what you are writing about, does it have meaning for most of your audience? This is critical.
All these things are things to take into account when writing a story. Writers should have these concepts in the back of their minds whenever they create content. You could some, all ,or none of this! Know where your are at as a writer! It will help to create more meaningful content. Content that will essentially share itself.
The power of writing is undeniable. Use writing to influence change.
